Croissants or something else?

27 January 2025

For lovers of the perfect breakfast and sweet temptations, let’s shed some light on a delicious journey to discover three great protagonists of our mornings: the croissant, the croissant and the brioche. Let’s get one thing straight: no, they are not the same thing, even if they are often confused. Take a seat, order a good cappuccino (or a freshly squeezed juice for the health conscious), and prepare to become experts on one of the most debated issues in Italian bars. Because, let’s face it, distinguishing between these three delicacies is a bit like knowing how to recognize a work of art: you need an eye, a palate and even a pinch of culture.

The croissant: the king of Italian breakfasts

Let’s start with our croissant, the national pride of breakfast. Its origins are rooted in a meeting between cultures: its ancestor is the “kipfel”, a crescent-shaped Austrian dessert introduced to Italy by Venetian traders way back in 1683. But, as often happens, Italy took the idea and made it his own, adding that touch of softness and sweetness that makes it unmistakable. The croissant is made with a rich and delicious dough: flour, milk, eggs, sugar, butter and yeast. Eggs are the secret ingredient that give it a fluffy texture and a sweeter taste than its French cousin. And then, do we want to talk about the fillings? Cream, jam, chocolate or even empty for purists: at La Fenice there is something for all tastes.

Brioche: an embrace of sweetness

And finally, here is brioche, that soft cloud of goodness that conquers hearts and palates from North to South. Be careful though: in the North, what is actually a croissant is often called brioche. But if we go down to Sicily, the brioche becomes a unique masterpiece, with its iconic “tuppo” on the top, ready to be filled with the classic almond granita or ice cream. The brioche dough is rich and abundant with eggs and butter, with an extra pinch of sugar for an enveloping sweetness. Its consistency is soft and slightly elastic, like a hug made of flour and love.

And now? To each his own!

Now that the differences between croissant, croissant and brioche are clear, we are ready to make an informed choice for your next breakfast. If you like soft and sweet textures, the croissant is the right soulmate. If you prefer lightness and that touch of French elegance, then croissant be it. Or if you are looking for a comfort food that brings a pampering, that’s why brioche is here. In our La Fenice pastry shop, we have everything you need to satisfy every morning desire. Whether you support the croissant, croissant or brioche team, we will be able to give you a moment of pure happiness… Accompanied, of course, by a good Illy coffee. Because breakfast is not just the first meal of the day, it is a real ritual. And we are here to make it special.
